Garment Realism. Level up With Lace.
Apparel Intelligence takes digital fashion to the next level with custom 3D textures of lace embroidery. We created the dress from design to 3D sample with a focus on lace embroidery, a classic fabric that demands careful intricacy and delicate skill. Our goal was to build curated digital texture maps that would allow us to achieve the photorealism of each thread.
Science Behind the Art
We first converted real lace into a procedural digital material and applied it to our true-to-life 3D pattern designs, dueling as perfect UV maps.
Shooting 4K photography of the lace, we then used a custom digital thread brush to paint over the embroidery to deepen the blacks for a more crisp definition and ambient occlusion. Next, we manipulated the chiaroscuro lights and darks of the photos to create various texture maps that determine the height, displacement, transparency, specular, and more. Finally, we used algorithmic software to seamlessly tile the textures onto our 3D garment.
